“The Now”
Let me ask you a question.
What kind of band appeals to people of all ages, from people in their 50’s and above to 14 year olds? You guessed it. Cover bands. However, to get any kind of good reaction from such a wide age range in an audience you have to be a really good cover band that covers a wide range of artists and styles and, in most cases, the songs have to sound like your seeing the original band.
Boy, did we see a great cover band yesterday at the Wisconsin State Fair.
The band I’m talking about is called The Now. These guys are, hands down, the best cover band I’ve yet to see. There is nothing cooler than seeing an audience built of such a wide age range all dancing and getting into a band on stage and somehow these guys make that happen. There was a huge crowd and there were few that were standing still.
The Now is a local band based out of the Milwaukee area. Their set list includes songs by Autograph (“Turn Up The Radio”), to Journey (“Separate Ways” and others) to Bon Jovi (“Runaway” and others) to songs like “Play That Funky Music”. The range of styles and the ability for this band to pull off every song to the note was really something to see.
There was something else about this band that was cool though. As they were playing their sets, they looked like they just absolutely loved being there doing what they were doing. As an example, after their first set I walked up to the guitarist to ask when their next set was. Normally when you walk up to someone like this, they act like they have better (or at least more important) things to do — since they are on break. This guy treated me like I was his best friend (ok, a little exaggeration, but bear with me). With all the stuff going on around the stage, each one of the guys in the band gave their full attention to the people they were talking to and didn’t seem rushed. They acted like they actually liked talking to the people who were enjoying hearing them play.
Seeing a good band is one thing. Seeing a good band that looks like they are honestly enjoying themselves and the effect they are having on an audience is something entirely different. When the show was over, each of us was a little disappointed that they were done.
For me, this show was awesome. Most of it was a combination of the fact that they are really a great band. The other part was their attitude, both while they were playing and how they dealt with their audience, even on their breaks. Check out their web site, find a place they are playing and go see them.
You won’t be disappointed.
By the way, we did get a few pictures of the band. They’re over in the photo album.
“Fly” to Randy Rhoads Grave Site on Google Earth
Jonna had mentioned to me the other day that the beta for Google Earth was over and that you could now download the application. I had tried to grab it during the initial beta, but was not allowed to download it.
Well, I finally got a copy of it, and have been playing with it for a bit this morning. One of the first things I wanted to do (aside from the normal “Hey I can see my house from here” exercises) was find the Randy Rhoads grave site on it, with the directions that Jonna had gotten Tom the Architect and I when we were in California.
Typing in the address didn’t quite do it, which I’m finding quite a bit on Google Maps and Google Earth. In each, typing my home address puts me down the street a ways. Luckily, the pictures of our neighborhood are recent enough that our fences are visible in order to identify the house.
Anyway, I did some “flying around” San Bernardino and I think I found the actual location and marked it. So, if you’ve got the application installed, go to Randy Rhoads Grave on Google Earth. If you do not have it installed yet, go get it. It’s quite fun to play around with and adds a whole new dimension to mapping.
Additionally, some quick Googling around got me to a place where someone has done the work to find the Bruce Lee grave site as well. The actual Keyhole placemark can be found at this link directly, but I would recommend reading the whole posting. It’s pretty cool and has a Quicktime VM look around the grave site included as well.

Sarzo’s Off The Rails Book Update
I received an email from the Diary of an Axeman Club forum, referring to another forum in which the moderator posted this message:
GOOD NEWS!!!
Just heard back from Rudy and he says the book is only delayed.
He says Amazon made a poor choice in wording the emails.
He appreciates everyone’s interest and support here.
The full message thread can be found on the randyrhoads.tk board. This board, according to the info in its rules section, is also frequented by members of Randy’s family and others like Kevin Dubrow, Kelli Garni (former bassist for Quiet Riot and Randys childhood friend), and Rudy Sarzo, so the source seems credible.
This is good news for Randy fans. I know I’ve been looking forward to the book since it was announced.
Off the Rails now Off the Press?
In May I reported that Rudy Sarzo had a book coming out called ” Off the Rails – My Adventures in the Land of Ozz”. It was due to be released in September and was available for preorder when I found it on Amazon. So I preordered it.
This morning, I received the following from Amazon:
We are sorry to report that the release of the following item has been
cancelled:Rudy Sarzo “Off the Rails – My Adventures in the Land of Ozz”
Though we had expected to be able to send this item to you, we’ve
since found that it will not be released after all. Please accept
our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience we have caused you.We have cancelled this item from your order.
Your credit card will NOT BE CHARGED for this item because you only
pay for items when we ship them to you.Your order is now closed.
I’ve looked around for announcements as to why the book is not being published but can’t find any articles yet. There isn’t even an announcement on Rudy’s site. If you run into any, please send them over.
I’m sure there are a ton of Rhoads fans that were really looking forward to this one. This would have been the only book to chronicle Randy’s life, up to and including the night of his death.
Needless to say, for me, and I’m sure for all Rhoads fans around the world, this is pretty disappointing.

A Saturday at the Beloit RiverFest
We spent yesterday hanging out in Beloit, WI at their Riverfest. The main reason we were there was to see AlterBridge and Collective Soul, but rather than go down at the end of the day we decided to make a day of it.
The festival is not something you can “make a day of”.
We spent a lot of time walking around, but not much time doing anything. Carnival games is not something we’re really interested in, so a lot of time was spent just sitting together and talking, or watching the kids play tag to kill time.
However, we did see some good bands. The band 529 opened on the main stage where AlterBridge and Collective Soul were to play at about 5:30. One thing we noticed immediately was that, although the ads for Riverfest that we had seen said, quite explicitly, that no cameras were allowed, everyone except us ignored the restriction. So out of everyone there, we were the only ones unable to get pictures except for a couple I tried to take with Jonnas cameraphone that wound up being worthless. So the first lesson, when they say they don’t allow cameras, they don’t really mean it apparently.
I enjoyed 529 a lot. They were a cover band, doing a lot of Nickelback, Seether, and Green Day stuff. They sounded great.
AlterBridge was incredible. Mark Tremonti is an excellent guitar player and the band really put on a good show. I found this show to be the most enjoyable of the evening. I really wish we would have ignored the stated camera rules, because we had some great seats and would have gotten some incredible pictures. The show was awesome.
Towards the end, however, we got tired of all of the people around us and decided to move way to the back of the park, so that we could listen to the music without dealing with the people. People at these kinds of shows are extremely self centered, and don’t look at the fact that they are positioning themselves in front of a group of people that have been sitting there all day to aquire their seats. I really wish people were more socially conscious sometimes.
Collective Soul was good, but we didn’t enjoy that show as much as the AlterBridge one. They’re a great band, but for some reason we weren’t that into it. We stayed for most of it, but wound up leaving to beat the mad rush out of the grounds.
So to wrap up and present a summary:
- Go for the show not the day unless you’re very good at amusing yourself
- bands — good
- people — rude and self centered
Essential Vai iMix Available on iTunes
I’ve created an iMix on iTunes with what I think are the Essential Vai songs for people who haven’t been exposed to Vai’s music. Click the link above to download it. The cost winds up being about $12.87 for 13 songs, and gives you pretty much what I think is the essential collection from almost all of his albums to introduce yourself to Steve Vai.
Now I just need to figure out how to sneak all of these into Kelsi’s iPod …
